Krystle Patel: Closed Circuit Systems
Exhibition and publication launch at FormaHQ, London
Having been asked during a residency with the Institute of Neurology at UCL to ‘demystify science’, Krystle Patel has responded by countering; why we need to do so? Through a wide and varied investigation of the space that persists between science and the public, Closed Circuit Systems presents a route to legibility via the development of trust.
This publication is the culmination of two years of artistic research, conversation and events. It touches on themes of conspiracy, archives, magic and nonsense to present a portrait of the Plun-Favreau lab. A variety of essays, visual work and links to sound and video provide a platform to engage with and become lost in the web created by Patel through which one may begin to encounter the dense space science navigates.
The event will also present a screening of a new film, Closed Circuit Systems: Space Madness featuring accounts from the lab members themselves alongside a surround sound audio played through custom made sculptural speakers featured in the film. Following this there will be the opportunity to sit in on a conversation between Patel, curator Rebecca Edwards and graphic designer Mitchell F Gillies during which they will discuss misbehaviour, legibility and objects in design.
Contributions and collaborators of the text include Aaja radio, The Architectural Association Archives, Biblioteka, Cubitt gallery, Esther Leslie, Federico Campagna, Fiona Glen, The Horse Hospital, Maybelle Peters and RTM FM.
