Future Artefacts FM

Future Artefacts FM is an artist run program that supports artists working with both sound and fiction, culminating in a program of radio shows, workshops and live events. The show is Hosted by Nina Davies, Rebecca Edwards and Niamh Schmidtke.

Founded by artists Nina Davies and Niamh Schmidtke, the program began when show hosts started making sound works that didn’t fit into traditional art spaces. Both works dealt with imagined futures in the form of a radio play and a fictional podcast, at just over 15 minutes long, Nina and Niamh were certain these works would never see the light of day in a gallery.

Following a three episode residency at RTM, from August to October of 2021, featuring first guest artist Rebeca Romero alongside works from Nina and Niamh, they decided to continue the program inviting more artists so as to present a broader range of futures. Some of the commissioned works have further culminated in physical, moving image and performance works.

In 2023 they produced a mini-series on Technology and Magic commission by Het HEM and in 2024 curator Rebecca Edwards join the team as the shows third co-host

This bi-monthly radio show, with Radio Thamesmead, features a 10–15 minute original works by a selected artists, usually in the form of a radio play, short story, fictional podcast or soundscape. The work is followed by a 40 minute conversation between the artist and hosts Nina, Rebecca and Niamh.

Each episode includes a bespoke soundtrack created by artist Joe Moss who's practice also works with fiction and John Trevaskis who works at Penguin Books Podcasts.
